New analysis shows that phone use, speeding, and hard braking jump 10 percent or more over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to Allstate.

Based on trips from nearly two million customers, analysis revealed that phone handling jumps on Tuesday night and Sunday evening.

Speeding peaks Sunday morning, up 11 percent as drivers race home from the long weekend.

“Drivewise shows distraction and urgency tend to spike during holiday travel,” said Allstate Safety Expert Brian Tidwell.

Hard braking surges Thursday midday, up 13 percent, likely the result of last-minute errands and local congestion.

Claims data revealed steep safety drops in cities like Honolulu and Madison.

Roadside service events surged on the Monday before Thanksgiving, data showed.

Midday (11 a.m.–3 p.m.) is one of the worst times to hit the road. Allstate data shows congestion peaks during these hours all week.

The data showed the least busy times to travel are:

  • Evenings (7–10 p.m.) and late nights (10 p.m.–1 a.m.) are consistently the least congested.
  • Morning rush hours (7–11 a.m.) – especially Thursday and Friday – are among the safest.

The most congested times to travel are:

  • Lunch hours (11 a.m.–3 p.m.) dominate as the busiest window throughout the week.
  • Afternoons (3–7 p.m.) Monday-Wednesday also show notable congestion spikes.

The result of an influx of out-of-state drivers in metro areas, holiday traffic is expected to surge in these cities:

  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Jacksonville, FL
  • Columbus, OH
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Oklahoma City, OK

Last year, these cities saw an average 46 percent jump in out-of-state traffic.

The days before Thanksgiving rank among the busiest of the year for Allstate Roadside. Last year, the number of roadside service events on Monday before Thanksgiving was 20 percent higher than average.
