Research and Hypothesis-Building Only Take You So Far

My colleagues and I had been investigating opportunities in the commercial insurance market, believing we could develop new, technology-supported products. One topic that we returned to repeatedly was small commercial trucking fleets—logistics firms with fewer than 16 cabs that had often grown from owner-operator arrangements into complex businesses that required real management oversight. This category was sizable in the U.S. It was an important part of the distribution supply chain, and it was a complicated risk category.

Our objective was to find a way to take risks that otherwise would have been challenging to underwrite and seek to make them more attractive by increasing risk visibility or by helping fleet owners mitigate risks—or both. We gathered data about the impact of distracted driving, escalating repair costs, nuclear verdicts, increasing liability costs as healthcare technology improved and more. We decided to build a concept around advanced telematics devices— packages that at the time included telematics, high-definition cameras, edge computing and advanced analytics—which we saw as a foundation to offer increased visibility for underwriters, performance data for fleet owners and maybe more services.
