New data highlights the most VIN-cloned vehicles in Canada, with the Ford F-150, RAM 1500, and Jeep Wrangler topping the list, according to CARFAX Canada.

VIN cloning, also known as re-vinning, is a type of auto fraud where criminals copy legitimate Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) onto stolen vehicles, affecting more than 372,000 vehicles nationwide.

It’s a form of auto fraud where the identity of a legitimate vehicle is taken and used to mask a stolen vehicle.

The buyer may face severe consequences if a vehicle with a fraudulent VIN is purchased, which may include seizure of the vehicle by law enforcement, insurance coverage denials for repairs or theft, substantial loss in the vehicle’s resale value, and the inability to sell or trade in the vehicle.

In response, CARFAX Canada has launched a new VIN Fraud Check tool to help used car buyers protect themselves from purchasing stolen vehicles.

“Buying a used vehicle privately offers choice and value, but it can also expose consumers to serious risks if the vehicle they purchase has a compromised VIN,” said Shawn Vording, president of CARFAX Canada.
