New analysis released by State Farm indicates U.S. drivers have a 1 in 127 chance of colliding with an animal, while the most common time of the year for these types of collisions to occur is during the fall and winter months of November, October and December.

More than 1.8 million animal collision insurance claims were filed in the U.S. between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023, the insurer reported in its annual analysis.

Offering a map of the U.S. in its report, the insurer highlighted the states most prone to animal/vehicle strikes.

West Virginia tops the list, with a likelihood of 1 in 38.

Montana (1 in 53 chance of a crash), Pennsylvania (1 in 59 chance), Michigan (1 in 60 chance of a crash) and Wisconsin (1 in 60) round out the top five states where a driver is most likely to strike an animal.

Iowa, Mississippi, South Dakota, Virginia and Missouri follow.

A growing animal population combined with the displacement of their habitats is to blame for an increasing likelihood of crashes.

The top five types of animal collisions reported by State Farm were: deer (1,288,714), unidentified animals (207,373), rodents (94,805), dogs (55,005) and raccoons (52,054).

Some tips to avoid collisions with deer and other animals:

  • Stay alert.
  • Use high beams.
  • Don’t swerve.
  • Brake as necessary.
  • Remember peak season.
  • Remember meal time — dusk until dawn.
  • Watch for herds.
  • No evidence whistles work.
  • Wear seatbelts.
