American International Group Inc., the largest commercial insurer in the U.S. and Canada, is closing an office in Georgia with 420 workers.

Some positions at the Alpharetta shared-service center will move to other AIG sites, including one in Olathe, Kansas, Jon Diat, a spokesman for the New York-based insurer, said in an email.

“The efficiency of our systems and operations is a critical consideration,” Diat said. “We hope some employees will consider relocation or transition to available openings in AIG.”

AIG has been cutting jobs and shifting workers to lower—cost locations to reduce expenses and improve efficiency. The Georgia plan was reported yesterday by WSB, an Atlanta radio station.

The Alpharetta site handles back-office tasks and functions as a call center for some AIG units, Diat said.

The insurer had about 64,000 employees as of Dec. 31, according to a regulatory filing.
