Arch Insurance made a number of new executive appointments. The Hartford appointed a former Liberty Mutual executive to lead its Small Business Innovation Lab. Guy Carpenter is getting a new executive, a promotion made possible by its parent company’s pending acquisition. American Financial Group hired on a new vice president.

Arch Insurance promoted Hugh Sturgess to the role of chief executive officer, Arch Insurance International, pending regulatory approvals.

The promotion becomes effective on Jan. 1, 2019. Arch Insurance International includes Arch’s insurance operations in Europe, Bermuda and Australia.

Sturgess has been with Arch Insurance since 2005 and is currently President and CEO of Arch Insurance Canada Ltd. In that role, he has strategic and operational responsibility for a multi-line underwriting portfolio. Before joining Arch, Sturgess held various roles in the financial services industry, including tenures with the Royal Bank of Canada and Chubb Insurance Company of Canada.

Sturgess will be based in London and will report to Nicolas Papadopoulo, Chairman and CEO of Arch Worldwide Insurance Group. He succeeds Matt Shulman, who was recently named CEO of Arch Insurance North America.

  • Gale Lockbaum, as president and chief operating officer of Arch Insurance Canada, with responsibility for finance, actuarial, claims, risk and compliance, and regulatory matters. Lockbaum has been with Arch Insurance Canada since 2011 and currently serves as chief financial officer.
  • Jean-Pierre Galipeault, as Arch Insurance Canada’s chief regional executive, focused on strategy, distribution and underwriting. Galipeault has been with Arch Insurance Canada since 2013, successfully managing its Lenders business unit.

The Hartford appointed Christopher Lowell to lead its Small Business Innovation Lab.

Lowell, an ex-Liberty Mutual executive, will be reporting to Stephanie Bush, head of Small Commercial and Personal Lines.

Lowell will oversee the innovation lab, which is located in New York City’s financial district. He will be focused on designing and testing new products and business models to meet the changing needs of The Hartford’s small business customers. Lowell is also responsible for attracting talent to further build his team, and The Hartford is currently hiring for several positions that support the Small Business Innovation Lab.

Before The Hartford, Lowell was a leader of corporate strategy and research at Liberty Mutual. Previous to that, he held strategic and leadership roles with companies in a variety of industries across the U.S., Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Guy Carpenter & Company made a new executive appointment stemming from parent company Marsh & McLennan Companies’ pending acquisition of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc.

Ross Howard, Chairman of JLT Re, will become vice chairman of Guy Carpenter, reporting to President & CEO Peter Hearn.

Howard will also become a member of Guy Carpenter’s Executive Committee, responsible for developing new business opportunities and assisting with client relationships in order to continue the growth of the combined global reinsurance business. Additionally, Howard will also play a key role in integrating JLT Re with Guy Carpenter.

American Financial Group, Inc. hired Anthony Dunn as vice president, overseeing the Internal Audit function for the company and its subsidiaries.

Dunn has 20 years of insurance and financial services industry experience. Before joining American Financial Group, he served as senior vice president and chief financial officer for Ohio National Financial Services, and prior to that, was Ohio National’s chief audit executive.

Previous to that, Dunn was a vice president for The Cincinnati Insurance Company, performing financial planning and analysis and internal audit management. He began his career in public accounting.
