The Travelers Companies marked the 10th anniversary of offering wedding insurance with an analysis of claims trends over the last decade, finding that vendor problems were the No. 1 cause of wedding-related insurance claims.

Vendor problems were the main cause of claims for nine of the last 10 years, with missing or damaged property taking the top spot in 2016.

Among the study’s other findings:

  • One-third of vendor issues involved venues that closed unexpectedly or couldn’t accommodate the wedding as promised.
  • 20 percent of all vendor-related claims were caused by photographers failing to deliver agreed upon photos, videos, etc.
  • Weather issues accounted for just 9 percent of claims on average over the past decade but in 2012 made up 20 percent of all wedding insurance claims.

With couples spending an average of $26,000 in total wedding costs, Travelers’ Wedding Protector Plan helps protect the wedding budget from unforeseen events. The no-deductible policy covers not only the wedding but also the rehearsal dinner and even the next-day brunch. Travelers said couples also can add liability coverage, which many venues require in case someone at the wedding is injured or causes damage to property of others.
