The Illinois based multi-line insurer said that users of its Drivewise Mobile smartphone app can now earn points – Allstate Rewards – for things including merchandise, gift cards and local offers. Through using the app, any driver can earn Allstate Rewards points, whether or not they’re an Allstate policyholder.

Drivewise can be downloaded for free through Apple’s iTune’s store or Google Play.

For this latest version of Drivewise Mobile, the safe driving encouragement comes from a point system, where customers can save on big-name merchandise if they rack up safe driving-related points. For example, if consumers can drive below 80 mph and avoid hard breaking for three consecutive days, they earn points. Users can see their challenge statuses and driving patterns by month, and more challenges will be added in the future.

Ginger Purgatorio, Allstate Connected Car vice president, said in prepared remarks that the product will help redefine what an insurance company offers, but also encourage safe driving in a way “that benefits everyone on the road.”

Drivewise, first launched in 2010, is a usage-based insurance product that uses telematics to measure driving, and has previously rewarded customers with insurance discounts if they use good driving habits. Allstate said that customers in 47 states can use Drivewise/Allstate Rewards for auto insurance savings or merchandise rewards.
