A much cooler Atlantic Ocean is likely to lead to fewer, less intense hurricanes this year, according to a forecast issued last month by meteorological consulting firm Weather Bell Analytics.
As La Nina fades, a possible El Nino is not expected to have much impact in the Atlantic, the analytics firm said.
Of the 15-19 estimated storms, 7-9 are expected to be Category 1 or greater and 3 at Category 2.5 or greater.
This follows the December 2024 early prediction made by Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), predicting there will be 15 tropical storms, with 7 named storms during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
According to Weather Bell, the forecast is based on the overall cooling of sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and the forecasted warming in the ENSO areas of the Pacific.
