The Travelers Companies, Inc. announced yesterday that engineers and data scientists have developed TravelersLLM, a proprietary large language model tailored to its property/casualty business.
According to a media statement released by the insurer, TravelersLLM was trained on millions of company documents. TravelersLLM “amplifies Travelers’ leading domain expertise by, among other things, enhancing underwriting analysis, accelerating research and model development, facilitating access to decades of institutional knowledge and improving workflows,” the company statement said.
The development of TravelersLLM reflects the company’s long-standing strategy of deploying advanced technology with proprietary data, the company said. As a core component within the company’s broader AI ecosystem, TravelersLLM serves as a foundational capability for agentic applications across the enterprise.
According to Travelers, the proprietary LLM outperformed commercially available AI models in tests seeking answers to “tens of thousands” of insurance-related questions. Travelers defined outperformance as “delivering higher-quality results at lower cost and with greater speed.”
“TravelersLLM combines our vast amounts of well-curated data and our industry expertise with leading AI capabilities, all delivered to the point of need, improving decision quality and productivity at scale,” said Mojgan Lefebvre, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology & Operations Officer at Travelers, in the company statement. ”
In a LinkedIn message posted on the day of the announcement, Lefebvre wrote that TravelersLLM, trained specifically for Travelers business, works alongside frontier models “to bring greater precision, context, and efficiency” to use cases that include underwriting, claims, and service. She stressed that while frontier AI models are advancing quickly, for the insurer, “true competitive advantage” comes from combining capabilities of frontier AI models “with what only Travelers has: decades of institutional knowledge, millions of proprietary documents, deep insurance expertise, and world-class engineering.”
“AI is only as valuable as the judgment behind it,” she wrote on LinkedIn. “That’s why we’re combining leading AI capabilities with Travelers’ unique expertise, all grounded in responsible AI practices.”
In the media statement, Lefebvre added that instant accessibility to Travelers institutional data, experience and expertise across the enterprise, allows Travelers professionals to “act more quickly and effectively, delivering even greater value to our customers and distribution partners.”
