A new white paper suggests that AI in workers compensation is best maximized when embedded directly into a framework of coordinated operational workflows rather than deployed as isolated tools or disconnected point solutions, according to international business and IT consultancy specializing in insurance Sollers Consulting, Guidewire and CLARA Analytics.

The white paper, entitled “Orchestrating Workers’ Compensation in the AI Era,” examines how AI-driven claims intelligence and connected technology ecosystems are reshaping operations across the U.S. workers’ compensation insurance market.

Insurers are using AI-driven analytics, predictive triage, workflow automation, and orchestration frameworks to identify escalation risks earlier, enhance reserving accuracy, streamline documentation-intensive processes, and support more proactive intervention strategies.

Analysis shows that technology adoption isn’t the problem for some insurers, but rather it’s the fragmentation illustrated by vendors and workflows that frequently operate independently rather than as part of a coordinated operational framework.

The report outlined several points where multiple handoffs in the claims process among “adjusters, nurse case managers, medical providers, bill review vendors, legal teams, payment systems, and external service providers” lead to communication gaps, inconsistent workflows, and limited visibility across the lifecycle which can introduce delays and inefficiencies, ultimately increasing costs and worsening outcomes.

The breakdowns directly affect claim duration, litigation rates, reserving accuracy, worker satisfaction, and overall claim cost, the report added.

Orchestration frameworks built around platforms can help insurers connect AI intelligence, claims workflows, medical management, payment systems, fraud detection, and return-to-work coordination for all parties involved in a claim’s lifecycle.

They argue that, as carriers continue modernizing claims operations, orchestration has emerged as a central competitive advantage, helping insurers reduce fragmentation, improve return-to-work outcomes, enhance operational efficiency, and support more proactive claims management across complex insurance ecosystems.
