A Zurich veteran is joining BHSI as head of Claims in Spain. AmWINS Group picked a former Swiss Re executive as its new vice president for Alternative Risk. An Allstate veteran signed onto Sompo International Holdings Ltd. as its latest chief human resources officer.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance named Javier Villalba to its expanding leadership team in Spain as head of Claims.

Villalba comes to BHSI with nearly 20 years of claims experience. He was most recently director for Expert Claims (Spain) and Claims customer relationship manager at Zurich in Spain.

Before that he spent 16 years in Claims at AIG, beginning as a claims adjuster and rising to the position of AIG South Europe Claims & Operations officer. He earned a law degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and completed his studies in Procedural Law at C.E. Ignacio de Loyola.

He is based in BHSI’s office in Madrid.

AmWINS Group Inc. made Alex Kaplan executive vice president for Alternative Risk.

In his new role, Kaplan will lead a new strategy around the development of parametric products and services and other bespoke coverages, on both a standalone basis and in conjunction with other traditional and non-traditional solutions for client risk transfer. He will also be responsible for developing new products and capital sources for AmWINS, its retail customers and their clients.

Before joining AmWINS, Kaplan spent 11 years at Swiss Re, where he most recently served as head of North America for the company’s Public Sector Solutions unit. In this role, he supported the needs of governments and international financial institutions in managing their financial risks to help society create effective responses to major challenges, including natural catastrophes and climate change, permanently transforming the industry’s approach to these risks.

Kaplan began his career by serving on the staff of the Committee on Ways and Means in the U.S. House of Representatives working on tax and economic policy. From 2006 to 2008, he served as the deputy to the assistant secretary for Legislative Affairs for the United States Department of the Treasury under Secretary Henry M. Paulson.

Sompo International Holdings Ltd. appointed Harriet Harty as executive vice president and chief human resources officer (CHRO) for its Commercial P&C operations.

Harty will oversee all human capital strategies globally for Sompo International P&C and will report to Brian Goshen, chief administrative officer, Sompo International. She will play a critical role in the strategic growth of Sompo International and will lead all functional aspects of the Human Resources organization, which include talent acquisition, talent management, compensation, learning and development, HRIS, benefits, payroll and business partner strategies.

Harty joins Sompo International with over 23 years of human resources experience, most recently serving as chief human resources officer for Allstate Insurance Company.
