Arch Insurance named a long-term executive at the company to lead its North American operations.

Matt Shulman will take on the newly created role of CEO, Arch Insurance North America, effective Jan. 1, 2019. He’ll be tasked with leading Arch Insurance’s operations in the United States and Canada, reporting to Nicolas Papadopoulo, chairman and CEO of Arch Worldwide Insurance Group.

Shulman, a 20-year insurance industry veteran, has been with Arch Insurance since 2009 and has served as the president and CEO of Arch Insurance Europe since 2016.

Additionally, Arch Insurance created a new organizational structure with three chief underwriting officers (CUO) dedicated to specific lines of business. These CUOs will provide strategic oversight of their business units, something Arch said will allow it to provide more flexible, comprehensive products and services. These executives will report to Shulman, and they are:

  • Brian First as chief underwriting officer – programs, property and specialty.
  • John Rafferty as chief underwriting officer – financial and professional lines.
  • Rich Stock as chief underwriting officer – large account casualty and surety.

In addition, John Mentz, who serves as president of Arch Insurance North America, has been promoted to the additional role of Arch Insurance Worldwide’s chief operating officer. Mentz oversees various corporate functions including finance, actuarial, operations and ceded reinsurance. Arch said Mentz will help the company globally to build out best practices across multiple regions where Arch operates. He joined Arch Insurance in 2002.

Arch Insurance Group Inc. is a member of Arch Capital Group Ltd., a Bermuda-based company that provides insurance and reinsurance globally through its various wholly owned subsidiaries. In March, longtime Arch Capital CEO Constantine “Dinos” Iordanou retired, and Marc Grandisson became the new CEO. Iordanou remains as a senior adviser and chairman.
