American International Group hopes an executive that helped bring Apple Pay and a number of mobile banking apps to JPMorgan Chase & Co. can help it generate similar digital customer service advances.
Michael Lewis will take on the job of chief digital officer at AIG as of July 1. He was previously global chief technology officer, digital, for the consumer business at JPMorgan Chase & Co. While there, he helped both shape and oversee a digital transformation at the company, and he was also head of the chief architecture and chief development officers.
Philip Fasano, executive vice president, chief information officer at AIG, said that Lewis’ hiring is part of its strategy to improve digital capabilities in order to give it a better competitive edge.
Lewis’ “proven record of success in developing and executing visionary digital transformation strategies will provide a strong foundation for the overall digital landscape we are working toward at AIG,” Fasano said in prepared remarks. (Lewis will report to Fasano.)
Lewis has more than 25 years of experience and was key in helping to launch important business products at JPMC, including the patent-pending Chase 3.0 online, Apple Pay, Chase Pay, Branch of the Future and Chase Mobile, a top-rated mobile banking app for iPhone and Android devices in the U.S. market.
Before JPMC, Lewis served in a number of senior technology positions at companies including Lloyd’s Banking Group and Bank of America.
A chief digital officer is a relatively new C-level position at insurance companies. Their skills are considered valuable because of the idea that better technology can help improve the customer experience.
