Steven Fass, a former CEO of White Mountains Insurance Group and a 39-year insurance veteran, has been named Lead Independent Director at Third Point Reinsurance.

Third Point Re created the position. Fass had served as a director for the company since February 2012.

In his new role, Fass will chair non-management executive sessions of the board, serve as a liaison between the board of directors and Third Point executive management, help set meeting agendas and also help the board chairman in board and board member performance assessments.

If the Third Point Re board chairman is unavailable, he’ll serve as acting chairman.

Fass is also a director of VIPE Syndicate Management, a London based runoff specialist, as well as its affiliate Inceptum Insurance Company.

Through his career, Fass also lead White Mountains Re and has had executive positions at a number of other companies including American Re and Skandia AmericaRe. He has also served as director at companies including White Mountains Insurance Group and One Beacon Insurance Group.
