State Auto Financial Corp. disclosed the Christmas passing of Robert Moone, a former chairman, president and CEO of the property/casualty insurance holding company.

Moone died at age 72, State Auto said.

Moone retired in 2006. He had become president and chief operating officer in 1996, and then chairman in 2001. He first joined State Auto back in 1970, in the commercial underwriting department, four years after receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology from The Ohio State University.

Moone served on the boards of the Insurance Education Foundation, the Griffith Foundation and the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. He also contributed his time to a number of nonprofit community boards, including the Salvation Army and the Friends of WOSU.

State Auto President and CEO Mike LaRocco noted “the genuine love and respect shown to [Moone] by not only family and friends, but former State Auto colleagues.”

“His commitment and contributions to State Auto will never be forgotten,” LaRocco said in prepared remarks.

LaRocco became president and CEO of State Auto in March 2015 and chairman in May, succeeding the now-retired Robert P. Restrepo.
