A veteran American International Group executive has been named its first-ever Chief Sustainability Officer.

In this role, Jennifer Waldner will be tasked with leading the development and implementation of a company-wide sustainability strategy. She’ll report to Thomas Leonardi, AIG’s Executive Vice President and Vice Chair, AIG Life Holdings, Inc.

Leonardi said in prepared remarks that establishing a Chief Sustainability Officer at AIG shows the insurer’s commitments to sustainability, along with its efforts “to take a thoughtful, coordinated approach” across its global footprint.

In a related move, AIG issued its first Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, which contains additional information about the company’s environmental, social and human capital initiatives. Waldner said that the report reflected a first step in the company’s broader sustainability initiative, “one on which we will continue to build.”

Waldner is slated to also develop a corporate structure under her newly-created position. She will lead a cross-functional team to drive global sustainability initiatives while influencing and mobilizing the execution of AIG’s sustainability strategy across the organization.

Waldner has more than 20 years’ experience working on matters related to corporate citizenship and sustainability. For the past ten years, she has held positions of increasing responsibility within AIG focused on these areas, most recently as Head of Citizenship for AIG Life and Retirement. Before joining AIG in 2008, she spent a decade in citizenship roles at State Street Corporation.
