Brian MacLean, The Travelers Companies’ longtime president and chief operating officer, plans to retire in early 2018.
MacLean, a 30-year Travelers veteran, has served as president and COO since June 2008, according to the company’s website. He is credited with helping to build Travelers’ business. MacLean also provided leadership continuity during the insurer’s transition from its late 
CEO Jay Fishman to its new leader, Alan Schnitzer, in 2016. Fishman stepped down from leading the insurer’s operations before dying of complications from Lou Gehrig’s disease in August 2016.
Schnitzer, now Travelers’ chairman and CEO, said that MacLean “made extraordinary contributions to Travelers” over the course of his career.
“He has been an integral part of our leadership team for more than a decade, helping to build Travelers into the company it is today,” Schnitzer said in prepared remarks. “We are deeply grateful for his leadership and dedication and wish him all the best in his next chapter.”
In his role as president and COO, MacLean has been responsible for all insurance operations including Business and International Insurance, Personal Insurance, Bond & Specialty Insurance, and the company’s runoff business overseas, according to the Travelers website. He also oversees Claim Services, including claim service delivery and technical claim results.
Previously, MacLean was executive vice president, Claim Services for Travelers from 2002 to 2005. From 1999 to 2002, he was president of select accounts.
In light of MacLean’s retirement, Travelers said it is realigning its executive reporting structure.
The following executives will now report to Schnitzer: Michael Klein, leader, Personal Insurance; Tom Kunkel, who leads Bond & Specialty Insurance; Nick Seminara, who leads Claim and Special Liablity Group; Kevin Smith, who leads International; and Greg Toczydlowski; who leads Business Insurance.
