Executives On The Move at AXIS Insurance, Starr Companies, Everest Re and JLT Re

AXIS Insurance tapped an Aspen Insurance veteran to be its new renewable energy underwriter. Starr Companies has a new global chief claims officer. JLT Re named a new executive in a key role.

AXIS Insurance, a business segment of AXIS Capital Holdings Ltd., hired Christina Tom as vice president, Renewable Energy Underwriter.

Tom will be part of AXIS Insurance’s global Renewable Energy team, and will lead its U.S. West Coast business, which underwrites wind, solar and energy storage risks. She’ll report to Tom Cain, vice president and head of U.S. Renewable Energy for AXIS Insurance.

Tom will be based in AXIS’ San Francisco office.

Tom, a 15-year insurance industry veteran, was most recently at Aspen Insurance, where she served for the last five years as vice president, Inland Marine. Before that, she was a senior underwriter in both Inland Marine and Commercial Insurance focusing on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest regions. Her career began in 2003 as a Commercial Insurance underwriter for Chubb.

Dave Fitzgerald is Starr Companies’ new global chief claims officer.

Fitzgerald is a 27-year industry veteran. His experience over that time focused on “increasingly progressive claims leadership roles,” Starr said.

Starr Companies encompasses the insurance and travel assistance companies and subsidiaries of Starr International, and also the investment business of C.V. Starr & Co. Inc. Starr provides insurance and investment products covering property, casualty and accident & health, plus specialty coverages including aviation, marine, energy and excess casualty insurance.

Everest Re Group promoted Jonathan Zaffino.

The president of Everest Re’s North America Insurance division and the reinsurer’s senior vice president is now executive vice president of Everest Re Group Ltd.

Zaffino has been with Everest since 2015, starting as president of Everest National Insurance Company/U.S. Insurance Operations. He became president of the North America Insurance division in 2016, where he took on oversight of the company’s Canadian Insurance operation as well as its Accident & Health department and Insurance Claims operation.

Everest Re is a Bermuda-based holding company focused on reinsurance and insurance for property/casualty and life insurers.

Global reinsurance broker JLT Re said Stephen Balderston will be joining its Credit and Political Risk team as a partner, once he has completed contractual obligations with his current employer, Guy Carpenter.

Balderston joins JLT Re after eight years at Guy Carpenter, where he was a senior vice president in Credit, Bond and Political Risk Treaty Reinsurance. Previously, Balderston was at RK Carvill.

Balderston is expected to join at the beginning of next year and will be based in JLT Re’s London office.

Nick Jay, divisional head for JLT Re’s Marine, Energy and Political Risk unit, noted that Balderston is one of three recent appointments to the Credit and Political Risk team.
