W.R. Berkley Hires Former Counsel to Ex-Speaker Boehner as Federal Lobbyist

An attorney who worked in Congress for former Speaker of the House John Boehner, and his successor, Paul Ryan, is W.R. Berkley Corp.’s new federal lobbyist.

Jo-Marie St. Martin’s official title for the insurer is vice president – federal government relations.

“Her unique knowledge and insights will be tremendous assets to our company, and we are pleased to welcome her to our team,” Berkley President and CEO W. Robert Berkley Jr. said in prepared remarks.

Berkley added he sees St. Martin as having “unparalleled experience managing the legislative and legal process and coordinating with key members of Congress and senior staff.”

St. Martin brings to Berkley more than 20 years of legislative and legal experience from her time working in the U.S. House of Representatives.

She was most recently a member of the transition team for Ryan, a Republican representative from Wisconsin. Ryan, currently serving his ninth term in Congress, has been House Speaker since October 2015, his website notes.

Ryan replaced Boehner after his retirement. St. Martin worked for Boehner, a long-time Ohio congressman and then Speaker, for 15 years, as general counsel and director of legislative operations.

St. Martin has a B.S. in mathematics and physics from Mary Washington College and a J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law.
