National Commission on Cybersecurity Convenes in NYC on May 16

Cyber SecurityA national commission focused on developing ways to enhance national cybersecurity is set to meet on May 16 in New York City, and property casualty insurers are making sure they have a stake in the process.

Representatives from the American Insurance Association plan to attend the meeting of the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, according to an announcement from the trade association. The AIA said that cybersecurity insurance is “a valuable risk transfer mechanism” that can also help companies “evaluate their individual risk management policies.” Also, the AIA noted it is working with states, Congress, and various Executive Branch agencies to address various cyber issues.

The Commission was established by Executive Order 13718 to make recommendations to the President about how to strengthen cybersecurity for both the public and private sector.

Plans call for the Commission to meet on May 16 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Vanderbilt Hall at the New York University School of Law, Center on Law and Security. A focal point of discussion: challenges and opportunities facing the finance and insurance sectors in terms of cybersecurity.
