Alexander Wells is Chubb’s new regional manager for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Region of the company’s North America Commercial Insurance Division.

This is a promotion for Wells, a 25-year insurance industry veteran who was most recently the North American manager of Chubb’s Specialty Casualty & Construction unit.

Before ACE purchased Chubb, he was chief operating officer of the ACE Westchester Specialty Casualty division. He joined the original Chubb in 1992 as an inland marine underwriting trainee, and held several positions before joining ACE Ltd. in 2006, as the North American manager of Excess Casualty for the middle market and construction segments.

In his new position, Wells succeeds Jeffrey Updyke, who was recently named Chubb’s chief operating officer of North America Field Operations. Wells will report to C. Scott Gunter, senior vice president, Chubb Group and Division President, North America Commercial Insurance.

XL Catlin appointed an entrepreneur from a UK conglomerate to be a partner with its Accelerate division.

Ashish Umre will officially be an Accelerate partner focused on Artificial intelligence. He’ll be tasked with developing XL Catlin’s participation in artificial intelligence projects by working with partner startups to understand and develop their technical abilities. The goal, XL Catlin said, will be to translate these capabilities into business products.

Accelerate is XL Catlin’s division focused on internal disruption and innovation. Launched in 2016, it looks to leverage commercial opportunities from new technologies and work closely with business leaders to drive transformational innovation.

Umre was previously with Tesco, where he was lead scientist, marketing Data Science & Optimization. Tesco, based in the UK, is a grocery and general merchandize retailer that has diversified into financial services and telecoms.
